Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, a historic appointment

On Thursday, April 7, Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed to the Senate by 53 votes against 47. In 232 years old, she is the sixth wife and the first black woman to access the Supreme Court of the United States, out of the 115 judges who have served there. A historic appointment and a political victory for Joe Biden who kept his campaign promise. “It’s a new stage so that our highest court reflects the diversity of America”, declared the American president on his social networks.

The Supreme Court remains the highest court in the United States. She slices on the major decisions of daily life, including in particular the carrying of arms, the right to abortion, the rights of minorities and even elections.

But who is Ketanji Brown? At 51, the Harvard law graduate was lawyer and federal judge. She was then appointed to the Court of Appeals for the Circuit of the District of Columbia, a prestigious function in the American judicial institution.

Will the appointment of Ketanji Brown have a decisional impact? Of the nine judges present in the Supreme Court, six judges are conservatives for only three progressives. Despite the symbolic victory of Ketanji Brown, the balance of power still remains unbalanced to hope for real change.
