A security researcher has made an unusual discovery by find the lyrics of a Coldplay song in the firmware of a Kingston KC2000 SSD.
In accordance with Hard Zonethe firmware, which is nothing more than internal software used for the correct management of a specific component, arouses little interest when looking for vulnerabilities, compared to the processors that have received the most attention in recent years.
Nicholas Starke, a security researcher, embarked on the task of examining the security of Kingston SSDs and delved into the firmware of the KC2000 drive in order to detect potential problems. However, he stumbled upon a totally unexpected surprise: the lyrics of a Coldplay song.
Faced with this astonishing discovery, Starke contacted Bleeping Computer, a medium specializing in computer security. It was his intention to share this unexpected finding within the SSD firmware and discuss its significance.
What song is it about?
Bleeping Computer was unable to shed any light on this discovery. The only explanation they could come up with was that it could be “sample data for testing”, but they can’t confirm this.. So far, Kingston has not commented on this curious find.
Specifically, The lyrics of the song “The Scientist” by the group Coldplay were found in the S2681103.bin file of the SSD firmware. When opened with a hexadecimal editor, you can appreciate the lines of the famous song.
The Kingston KC2000 SSD was released in early 2020 and is noted for its “improved performance in certain QD1 workloads.” The release note makes no mention of the presence of Coldplay’s lyrics. Now the question arises as to whether it is an accidental event or if it really is an “easter egg” hidden in this SSD.
