The Covid-19 pandemic is forcing the greats of Spain to tighten their belts: LaLiga has almost halved the salary cap of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid for the 2020-2021 season, according to figures released Tuesday by the organizer of the championship.
Barça’s salary cap (the amount that the club is entitled to spend on salaries of players, management members and the reserve team) thus drops from 671.4 million euros in 2019-2020 to 382.78 M EUR this season, forcing the Catalan club to negotiate further salary cuts with professional players and management.
In the 2019-2020 financial year, the Blaugrana side spent EUR 532.4m on salaries, according to the budget published by the club.
Like Barça, Real Madrid also sees its salary cap greatly reduced: it was EUR 641m in 2019-2020, it will be EUR 468.5m this season.
The salary cap, calculated according to various variables, is an indicator used by LaLiga (the body that manages professional football in Spain) to exercise economic control over the 42 professional clubs of the first and second divisions, which have all seen their lower ceilings.
The pandemic has led to the closure of stadiums, club museums, shops or the reimbursement of memberships, and has hit hard the accounts of clubs, which must now find ways to reduce their costs.
“Today, to end the season, overall, Spanish football lacks 490 million euros to pay club fees,” explained Javier Tebas, LaLiga boss, on Saturday at a conference organized by the Spanish sports newspaper Marca.
“If there is no public (in the stadiums) until the end of the season, the shortfall would be 707 million euros,” said Tebas, recalling that “the higher the level of the club is high, the more it is affected ”.
“Today we have around 600 million euros less to spend,” added the LaLiga boss, stressing that “there are clubs that need to reduce their payroll or sell players ”.
With this in mind, FC Barcelona have started negotiations with their players for a reduction in salaries, while the Spanish press argued last week that Real Madrid would also consider doing the same.
