Large, Real-World, Multi-Center Study Shows Viz.ai Platform Saves Crucial Minutes in Stroke Management

The study, conducted at 166 facilities in 17 states, finds that care coordination by AI is a prerequisite for the management of acute strokes.

SAN FRANCISCO, February 08, 2023–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Viz.ai, the leader in AI disease detection and care coordination, and TeleSpecialists LLC, a physician-owned management services organization committed to providing exceptional care, urgent and non-urgent, to neurology and psychiatry patients through telemedicine, announced new data presented today at the International Stroke Conference (ISC); said data come from the VALIDATE study (Validation of Artificial intelligence to LImit Delays in Acute stroke Treatment and Endovascular therapy). Study demonstrated that hospitals’ use of Viz’s AI-powered care coordination platform resulted in a 39.5-minute reduction in patient arrival at the time of first contact with the neuro-interventionist for possible emergency endovascular treatment.

VALIDATE Study: Median Arrival to Neurointerventionalist Notification Times (Graphic: Business Wire)

“In the field of stroke treatment, the phrase ‘Time is brain’ comes from the fact that when brain tissue is deprived of oxygenated blood, approximately two million neurons die every minute,” said Theresa Sevilis, DO, director of clinical research at TeleSpecialist and co-author of the study. “The data from VALIDATE shows that using the Viz platform resulted in a clinically important decrease in the time it takes to recognize a large blood vessel occlusion and make contact with the response team, which could translate to fewer dying neurons and ultimately better patient outcomes. »

The independent VALIDATE study analyzed data extracted from acute stroke consultations seen by TeleSpecialists neurologists in emergency departments at 166 facilities in 17 states. A total of 14,116 patients were included in two groups: those seen in hospitals using AI (n=8,557) and those seen in hospitals not using AI (n=8,557). =5,559). The study found that the average time to neuro-interventional notification for IA was 50 minutes compared to the average time to neuro-interventional notification for non-IA which was 89.5 minutes (p<0.001), i.e. a difference of 39.5 minutes. Importantly, the statistically significant (p<0.01) improvement in time to recognize a large clot and contact the neuro-interventional team in centers equipped with Viz occurred independently whether or not the center is able to perform a thrombectomy.

“These data, which result from measuring the impact of our platform on patient care under real-world conditions, consolidate the results we have seen in previous studies that have typically involved a single center with a limited number of patients. said Jayme Strauss, Head of Clinical Services, Viz.ai. “The first multi-center study with a large number of patients, VALIDATE compared the results of the same period between hospitals that used the Viz.ai platform and those that did not use AI software, eliminating the confounding effect of changes in work capacity that occur in hospitals over time. This tightly controlled scientific study clearly illustrates the far-reaching impact of our technology. »

“The VALIDATE results demonstrate a temporal improvement in emergency stroke management between Viz-equipped and non-Viz-equipped centers, a statistically significant and clinically very important improvement,” said Thomas Devlin, MD, PhD, professor of neurology at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center and co-author of the study. “The study design provided a very meticulous and rigorous insight into the power of the Viz.ai platform to aid in the treatment of one of the most pressing diseases in all of medicine. »

Last year, Viz.ai and TeleSpecialists announced a strategic partnership to coordinate care using AI with leading telemedicine neurologists to optimize treatment time and improve patient outcomes in the United States.
