Last preparations for the return of Handel’s “Messiah” to Girona

The “Messiah of Participatory Handel” returns to the Girona Auditorium on December 23 under the direction of Mireia Barrera and with the accompaniment of the Geriona Juvenil Choir, the GiroNins Children’s Choir and the Madrigal Choir. After a 2020 without being able to organize the concert of this famous oratory of Handel for Christmas due to the Covid, this year the Participatory Messiah Association is already finalizing the last details of the oratories of Girona and Barcelona.

For the first time, the direction will go to a female conductor, Mireia Barrera, a renowned Catalan choir director who was in charge of the Madrigal Choir until 2019, and who will now conduct them again in these two concerts. In addition, in the case of the Girona concert, there will also be the incorporation of young people and children when performing the famous “Hallelujah”. Specifically, 23 boys and girls from the Geriona Juvenil Choir and the GiroNins will take part. “This has been an initiative of the members of the Girona association, who have wanted to include the voices of these young choirs,” said Joana Uribe, vice president of the Participatory Messiah Association, in a statement yesterday in the Diari de Girona.

According to the association, the two groups have been rehearsing the soprano voice in recent days with their directors, Imma Pascual and Martí Farrer, while this weekend they were added for the first time to rehearsals at the Instituto Sobrequés dels 150 people from Girona who will sing with the Madrigal Choir in the Auditorium. “Mireia Barrera was very happy with the previous work that the children have done. On Saturday they were working on some nuances in what was a very productive rehearsal, “said Uribe.

Participating singers from the Participatory Messiah Association have been rehearsing since the end of October on weekends, according to the organization. The first weeks were spent with two preparatory directors, Martí Ferrer in Girona and Alfred Cañamero in Barcelona, and the following weeks they did so under the leadership of Barrera, this year’s principal director. In total, they will have rehearsed for 45 hours before the concert.

A “special” concert

“This Messiah of Handel is very special because it brings together professionals and people who love music,” said the vice president of the association, who added: “It will be spectacular to have 150 voices in Girona, between the stage and the side boxes, to which we must add the 45 of the Cor Madrigal ».

In fact, the organization explains that “it is not usual” to have a choral mass of this magnitude that has worked so hard in the preparation of such a concert. “In Europe, there are participatory concerts in London, Amsterdam … but they are not prepared. On the other hand, it is prepared with taste and work “, declared Uribe.
