The Brazilian authorities dismantled this Wednesday 18-N a network of lawyers that helped the leaders of the First Command of the Capital (PCC), the largest criminal faction in the country, mediated in the payment of bribes and acted as messengers of the gang, among other functions.

The Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Sao Paulo carried out 13 prison orders and 23 raids against the “legal cell” of the PCC, the powerful organization that emerged in the 1990s in São Paulo prisons and was mainly dedicated to drug trafficking.

According to the investigation, the PCC hired a series of lawyers to circumvent the prison controls, since some of their leaders are in prison, and to be able to communicate with the rest of the gang members released in order to continue developing their illicit activities.

They began using this method after on February 13, 2019, several drug lords from the gang were transferred to maximum security federal prisons in Porto Velho, Mossoró and Brasilia.

“The main objective of the transfer was to prevent the leaders of the faction from continuing to transmit orders from within the prisons,” the Public Ministry said in a statement.

At least one of the members of the upper echelon, nicknamed “Armani”, hired lawyers from various regions of the Brazilian territory “with the main purpose of allowing the heads of the imprisoned PCC to continue communicating with members of the faction at large,” according to the Prosecutor’s Office .

“By means of face-to-face appointments, the hired lawyers brought the information to the leaders and received orders that had to be transmitted to other criminals,” he added.

The lawyers also mediated in the payment of bribes to policemen, demanded the payment of debts and even transmitted “death threats” from the organization’s commandos.

The involvement of the defenders reached such an extreme that they sometimes “became involved in disputes that were resolved by the faction’s discipline system.”

The PCC is considered the most powerful criminal faction in Brazil and in recent years has extended its drug trafficking networks throughout the country, as well as abroad.

The group is allegedly commanded from prison by Marcos Willians Herbas Camacho, alias “Marcola”, held in a maximum security prison in Brazil.
