“Mr. President, we, former heads of government, former ministers, elected officials, members of parliaments, have the honor to write to you to express our satisfaction with the sovereign decision of the United States of America to recognize the full sovereignty of Morocco over the entire territory of the Sahara “, indicate the signatories of this letter, repeated in a tweet published by the former Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Ambassador to the United States and Israel, Mr. Giulio Terzi .
This call was able to bring together in a very short time 250 signatories from 25 countries in the four corners of the world. These are Italy, Argentina, Armenia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Czech Republic, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Ireland, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Lucia, Serbia, Spain, as well as members of the European Parliament and mayors of major cities and towns, in Europe and around the world.
Among the signatories of this letter are the former Czech President, Mr. Vaclav Klaus, the former Guatemalan President, Mr. Jimmy Morales Cabrera, the former Bulgarian Prime Minister, Mr. Gueorgui Bliznachki, the former member of MINURSO, Mr. Stephan Todorov Davidov, as well as several deputies and senators currently in office.
The United States’ decision comes at a time when the political process for the settlement of this dispute needs a new lease of life, say the signatories. Autonomy, they add, is the only way to end the suffering of the population living in the Tindouf camps in Algeria, ensure reconciliation and achieve permanent peace and stability in a strategic region, by making it a true vector of peace, stability and prosperity in Africa, even in the world.
“We can only welcome the decision of the United States to recognize the autonomy initiative as the only basis for a solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara, because we believe that it opens up concrete perspectives to guide the process. policy of the UN towards a final solution “, they specify, saying they are convinced that the United States, under the presidency of Joe Biden, will continue to advance the question of the Sahara towards a just and lasting solution thanks to their continued support to the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative.
“We are concerned about the consequences that could have the indefinite prolongation of the status quo, of the impasse, by the acts of destabilization often carried out by armed militias, in a highly strategic area, and whose stability is intimately linked to stability of the African continent and even of the Euro-Mediterranean basin “, underline these various personalities, with political tendencies confused with a predominance of the parties of the center-left.
The signatories were also delighted with the development, in all directions, experienced by the Moroccan Sahara, which records honorable human development indices, indicating that this positioning was made possible thanks to the new development model of the southern provinces launched. by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in 2015 and with a budget of 8 billion dollars.

This development goes hand in hand with a flourishing democratic local governance, knowing that in 2015, the two regions of the Sahara recorded the highest participation rate in the first regional elections organized in the history of Morocco, note the signatories of the letter.
“Today, Sahrawis, including a former Polisario official, chair the two regional councils of the region through free and transparent elections, making them the only legitimate representatives of the population of the region”, they underline, adding that these elected officials propose, vote and execute within a framework of contractualization with the State, the development projects of their regions meeting the aspirations of citizens.
He added that this management is already a prelude to the management offered by autonomy within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, with the creation of regional legislative, executive and judicial bodies.
“We believe that it is no coincidence that a growing number of nations, and with them the United States, are supporting the Autonomy initiative as a realistic, practicable and lasting political solution based on on the compromise “, insist the 250 signatories.
They indicate in this context that it is towards this same solution that the last 27 resolutions of the UN Security Council have called, specifying that several UN envoys have come to the conclusion that “the independence of the Sahara is not a realistic option “.
