Lebanon “satisfied” with the final draft of the border demarcation agreement with Israel

Deputy Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Elias Bou Saab, announced that Lebanon has received the final draft of an agreement brokered by the United States to demarcate Maritime Border with Israel Meet all requirements Lebanon It could soon lead to a “historic agreement”.

“If all goes well, the efforts of Amos Hockstein It could lead to a historic agreement.”

He was referring to the US mediator Hochstein, who has been engaged in shuttle diplomacy for months between the two countries, trying to reach an agreement to demarcate the common maritime border.

“We received minutes before the final draft…Lebanon felt that it takes into account all Lebanon’s requirements, and we believe that the other side should feel the same,” Bousaab said.

The official Israeli view of the latest draft of the agreement is not yet clear.

Earlier on Sunday, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said that his country would receive the final version of the proposal to demarcate its maritime borders with Israel within hours.

He added that the American mediator informed him in a phone call that the observations on the proposal had been identified. A statement issued by the Lebanese presidency stated that “the Lebanese side will study the final version of Hochstein’s proposal carefully in preparation for taking the appropriate decision.”

Last week, Israel rejected last-minute changes made by Lebanon to the draft agreement, casting doubt on years of diplomatic efforts.

Officials from both countries have been in close contact through the American mediator during the past days in an attempt to resolve existing differences.

Despite the agreement’s limited scope, it would ease security and economic concerns in both countries, which have a common history of conflict.

The deal will resolve a territorial dispute in the eastern Mediterranean in an area where Lebanon aims to explore for natural gas, and near waters where Israel has found quantities suitable for commercial use.
