Lewis Hamilton knows there will come a time when he will eventually have to put an end to his F1 career, but says he’s not ready to do so just yet.
Lewis Hamilton will enter the final year of his contract with the Mercedes F1 team in 2023, but there are signs that it won’t be his last deal with the team.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has revealed that Lewis Hamilton has said he has five more years in Formula 1.
Although he did not confirm numbers, Lewis Hamilton explained that the time to retire is not yet around the corner.
“It’s not forever, but something inside says, ‘It’s not done yet. We have to keep pushing. There’s more to do, more to achieve,'” Lewis Hamilton said at The New. told the York Times.
“It’s going to be hard to quit racing one day. I’ve been racing for 30 years, but it will be over 30 years before I finally quit. Luckily, it’s this moment, right now. is not”
“One day I will want to have a family and that will be my biggest focus, but for now being in F1 with Mercedes is that.”
Lewis Hamilton has urged his father Anthony and brother Nicholas to continue racing, but has revealed that his mother and sister are less enthusiastic when it comes to pushing his racing interest.
The seven-time F1 world champion has interests outside of F1, including business, philanthropy and, more recently, acting and filmmaking.
“My father and my brother are like, ‘Keep racing forever’ because they’re racers,” said Lewis Hamilton.
“I know you want me to do whatever I want with my mom and sister.”
“They also understand how heavy it is and how exhausting it can be. Sometimes when I go to my sister’s house I pass out on the couch.”
But while the demands of the F1 schedule come at a cost, Lewis Hamilton says his love for F1 means he has more to give.
“Because I love what I do, there is no doubt about it,” Hamilton said when asked why he continued in F1.
“I really like the challenge every weekend and how we show up every weekend as a team.”
The 2022 season has been a very difficult season for Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes F1 team. Hamilton instead suffered a winless season in F1 for the first time in his career, rather than chasing a record eighth world champion once more.
The Mercedes W13 failed to put Lewis Hamilton and George Russell in title contenders, and talk swirled at the start of the season that it would force Hamilton to the door of F1 retirement.
But Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff says there are no such concerns.
Toto Vorg has revealed that Lewis Hamilton is “very good at sensing what’s right for him”, adding: “Not specifically about a contract extension, but where we are going as people. “We have regular conversations about why and what our purpose is. We have a constant discussion of that.”
