As the city announced on Monday afternoon, three siblings contracted diphtheria. One of the children goes to the Friedrich-Fröbel-School, the other to the “First Chemnitz Kindergarten Model” day-care center.

“The affected contact persons were written to by the health department, they will be examined and treated from Tuesday,” says the city.

Diphtheria is an infectious disease caused by bacteria and transmitted by droplets. The disease can be life-threatening for those affected! The reason for this is a narrowing of the airways.

Today, about five to ten percent of those who contract diphtheria die. However, early treatment often leads to the disappearance of the symptoms of the disease.

The disease has become rarer since the introduction of the diphtheria vaccination in Germany in 1955. Vaccination should be given in childhood and boosted in adolescence.

Adults should then get another booster shot against diphtheria every ten years.

“The tuberculosis cases are four children and their parents who are currently being treated clinically,” the city said.

The sick children attend the “Michaelstraße II” day-care center. All affected contact persons will now be written to by the health department. Next Wednesday there will also be an information event for parents of the daycare center.

Tuberculosis is also caused by bacteria that can be transmitted by droplets. The pathogen triggers coughing, but can also affect other organs.

For a healthy person, tuberculosis usually does not pose a major threat. However, for people with a weakened immune system and malnourishment, tuberculosis can be fatal!
