STUDY ON CHLOROQUIN
Neither chloroquine nor its derivative hydroxychloroquine is effective against Covid-19 in hospitalized patients. Worse, these molecules increase the risk of death and cardiac arrhythmia, warns a large study published this Friday. In view of the first results, the researchers recommend not to prescribe them outside of clinical trials.
Carried out on nearly 15,000 patients, this is the “first large-scale study” to show “robust statistical evidence” that these two treatments that are so much in the news, “do not benefit patients of Covid-19 “said Dr. Mandeep Mehra, lead author of the study published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet, in a statement.
Scientists analyzed the data of these 15,000 patients treated with chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, then compared them with those of 81,000 patients in the control group who did not receive this treatment. Result: a much higher risk of mortality than in the control group (9.3%). 16.4% of deaths for chloroquine alone, 22.2% when it was combined with an antibiotic, 18% for hydroxychloroquine alone, and 23.8% when it was associated with the same antibiotic.
