Lord – GTA V: an insolent success with 150 million units sold

After eight years of career, GTA V remains a real ticket machine for Rockstar Games. When publishing its results for the last quarter, the parent company, Take Two Interactive, announced the staggering figures recorded by the video game. GTA 5 has just set a new sales record. The publisher took the opportunity to say more about Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA VI.

150 million units sold in eight years

Success is insolent. GTA 5 sold 5 million copies during the last quarter, that is to say from April 1 to June 30, 2021. That’s a lot, a lot, especially for an open world video game including the first release dates from 2013. Throughout this long career of eight years, this fifth opus will have sold in 150 million units. It is quite simply the best-selling title of all video games from Rockstar Games and Take Two Interactive.

Now the title is closer to Minecraft which holds the absolute record of 200 million copies distributed in 2020. The arrival of GTA V on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S this year will have to boost sales. It is therefore not to be excluded that the organized crime game will one day become the best-selling title of all time. While waiting for the record, he has already led the video game series Grand Theft Auto to cross the mark of 350 million units sold. These five times better than Mortal Kombat (65.1 million) which is yet the best-selling fighting game series of all time.

GTA Online is no exception. The online mode is even experiencing a meteoric boom. Over the past two years, the number of gamers connected to the online video game service has increased by 72%. Moreover, GTA Online alone completes a good part of the quarterly turnover of Take Two Interactive. The group mentions an increase in in-game purchase income of 15% to represent 70% of the turnover achieved over the last three months.

Red Dead Redemption 2 also works very well

GTA V is not the only title to hit Rockstar Games. Red Dead Redemption 2 also works very well. In two years of operation, the second opus of the Red Dead saga has sold 38 million units. Its online poster version does not blush in the face of its numbers. No less than 61 million gamers have played online video games in two years. The number of players on Red Dead Online has also increased by 18% during the last quarter.

News from GTA VI

The icing on the cake, Take Two Entertainment was kind enough to say a little more about GTA VI. The publisher has confirmed that its development is well underway. It is not much, but it is enough to reassure oneself that the title will be well launched. But beware, GTA VI will not arrive tomorrow. Take Two intends to fully exploit the goose that lays the golden eggs that is GTA V before presenting its successor. Case to follow !!!
