The federal government is putting pressure on cantons like Zurich. You should vaccinate faster. But the vaccine is missing. It is now even less than announced.

Waiting for the vaccine: On January 4th, the first couple in the canton of Zurich received a vaccination. According to the Federal Council, 8,000 people are to be vaccinated a day in February.

There are tough requirements for the Zurich health director Natalie Rickli. On Thursday evening, Federal Councilor Alain Berset asked the cantons to increase their vaccination quota. Berset said literally: “It must be possible for the cantons to vaccinate 525 people per day and per 100,000 inhabitants in February.”
For the canton of Zurich, with its 1.5 million inhabitants, this would mean almost 8,000 vaccinations a day – from the week after next.
The latest figures from the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) show how difficult it will be to achieve the target. It published the cantons’ vaccination rates on Friday morning.
