From Northeastern to the NHL: Lund’s Fast Track

Bridgewater, Massachusetts native cam Lund is poised to make his National Hockey League debut with the San Jose Sharks this Thursday, marking the culmination of a rapid ascent following the end of his junior year campaign with the Northeastern University Huskies. Lund, drafted No. 34 overall by the Sharks in the 2022 NHL Draft, signed his entry-level contract on March 21st, signaling the start of his professional career.

Lund’s final season with the Huskies was a resounding success, as he led the team with an impressive 18 goals and contributed 22 assists. This performance solidified his decision to turn pro. “It was a big year for me,” Lund said. “I was planning on turning pro after the year, and then obviously had a good year and ultimately signed. So I’m very happy.” this statement underscores the significance of his college performance in accelerating his NHL trajectory.

Sharks’ Expectations and Lund’s Progress

discussions between Lund and the Sharks regarding his future plans were ongoing throughout the season, highlighting the organization’s vested interest in his development. Sharks’ coach Ryan Warsofsky acknowledges the challenge ahead for Lund, emphasizing the heightened speed and intensity of the NHL game compared to college hockey. “The pace of the game is going to be extremely high compared to – nothing against college hockey in the playoffs and NCAA tournament, but it’s different. You’re talking about playing, if you’re 19 or 20, 21, playing against a guy that’s 35,” Warsofsky said. “That will be the biggest adjustment.” This is a common challenge for young players transitioning to the NHL, where they face seasoned veterans with years of experience and refined skills.

warsofsky also noted Lund’s physical attributes, highlighting his 6-foot-2 frame as a notable asset. He drew parallels between Lund’s potential development and that of Collin Graf, another player who transitioned from college hockey to the Sharks and benefited from the team’s training staff. In the context of american sports, this kind of comparison is frequent, allowing fans to assess player potential based on known quantities.

Lund himself recognizes the areas where he needs to improve, echoing his coach’s sentiments. “Putting on some muscle in the summer and at school too, but I’m just realy focused on my details, defensive zone, and my wall plays,” he explained. “Two big things that I kind of prioritized at school this year, and then the offense took over from there.” This focus on defensive responsibility and puck management is crucial for young players looking to earn ice time and contribute to their team’s success in the NHL.

Mentorship and player Comparisons

Lund looks to established NHL players for inspiration and guidance. He models his game after star center Jack Eichel, known for his offensive prowess and playmaking ability. The Sharks’ development staff has also provided Lund with film of winger Troy Terry, another right-handed shot with scoring capabilities.”Right-handed shot that can score, has good tools in scoring areas,” Warsofsky said of Terry. “Terry’s a good comparison. We’ll have to see how he does in the games and then it gets going.”

Connections and Comfort Levels

Lund’s transition to the Sharks is aided by several personal connections within the organization. He attended Cushing Academy, Warsofsky’s alma mater, fostering a pre-existing relationship. He’s also played with Collin Graf and worked out with Henry Thrun, creating a familiar environment within the team. This pre-existing relationship helps players to acclimate more quickly to the new team.

Adding to the team’s diverse backgrounds, Lund completes the “Beanpot collection” for the San Jose Sharks, with players now hailing from Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, and Northeastern. The beanpot is a prestigious college hockey tournament in Boston, showcasing the talent of local universities.

“Having guys who’ve played college, you can connect with them a little bit and make you feel a little bit more pleasant. It’s a nice feeling,” he said.

Family Support and Debut Anticipation

Lund’s NHL debut against the Toronto Maple Leafs will be a special occasion, with friends and family traveling to witness the milestone. “I have my family, teammates and a bunch of friends coming in on Wednesday and Thursday,so be exciting for them to hopefully watch me play,” he smiled. “Probably around 20 [people]. I mean, it’s still a far flight. I have one of my buddies from Barcelona coming in, so it’ll be good to see him.” The presence of loved ones can provide a significant boost to a player’s confidence and performance during such a momentous event.
