LuxembourgYour gas bill should almost double before winter

LUXEMBOURG – Customers of gas suppliers should expect prices to rise by 80-90% by the fall. The CSV asks the government to react.

Gas prices will increase in Luxembourg.

Luxembourg is facing unprecedented inflation and the situation should not improve in the fall. According to suppliers SUDenergie and Enovos, the bill should almost double with an expected increase of 80 to 90% before winter. A surge in prices that worries the CSV. MP Marc Spautz sent an urgent parliamentary question on Thursday to find out more about what is planned for the 90,000 customers, whether individuals or businesses.

The opposition party is wondering about a possible aid plan and a new package of measures. So many topics that could be discussed at the start of the school year with a probable new tripartite following Statec’s announcement of a new index tranche in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Network costs covered

Remember that the government has put in place a energy tax credit for medium and low incomes from July in order to compensate for the last postponement of the indexation of wages and pensions. The discount of 7.5 cents at the pump has also been extended until August, but it will not be renewed.

The government will therefore have to find solutions to deal with this explosion in the price of gas. For the time being, the network costs are borne by the State and the social office can meet the difficulties of low-income households.

The Minister of Energy Claude Turmes had announcement have for the moment “no problem of supply” of gas. 25% dependent on gas from Russia, via Belgium, the Grand Duchy consumes approximately 9 TWh of natural gas each year. A figure that the minister wants to see reduced.

The Ecologist wants Luxembourg to reduce its gas consumption by 15% by March 2023. In the meantime, prices will rise and residents are called upon to save energy. But individuals will be the last to be affected by any cuts: “These are protected customers, like hospitals,” the ministry had promised.
