Mac sales on the up: Apple surges as the overall global market falters | news

From January to March 2002, most of the world’s leading computer manufacturers had to accept significant declines in sales compared to the same quarter of the previous year. At best, the number of units sold stagnated. Apple is quite different: The Californian company, which once again presented impressive quarterly figures yesterday, once again sold more Macs than in the corresponding three months of 2021. Naturally, the global market share also increased.

Apple increases Mac sales by eight percent
According to Tim Cook, Apple’s business suffered in the first quarter from the ongoing chip crisis and supply chain disruptions. However, sales of the Mac division grew by 1.3 billion US dollars compared to the same period last year, which corresponds to a growth of almost 14.5 percent. This increase is also reflected in the number of units sold Counterpoint Research determined. According to the market researchers, Apple sold a total of 7.1 million Macs from January to March 2022, 0.5 million more notebooks and desktops than in the first calendar quarter of 2021. The growth therefore amounts to eight percent.

Significant declines at Lenovo and HP
These numbers are particularly remarkable because almost all other computer manufacturers had to accept significant sales declines. According to Counterpoint Research, the global market leader Lenovo sold 18.2 million devices in the first quarter of this year, ten percent less than from January to March 2021. HP, number two, was hit even harder: the US company scored 15.9 million notebooks and desktops (Q1 2021: 18.8 million), a decrease of 16 percent. Only Dell was able to maintain its sales figures and increased by 0.1 million or one percent. All other manufacturers together recorded an increase of three percent to a total of 23.8 million computers (Q1 2021: 23.1 million). Apple’s global market share increased by one percentage point on the continued success of Macs.

Apple expects continued delivery problems
Counterpoint Research names four causes for the general downturn. Global inflation is reducing the purchasing power of consumers and companies, according to the market researchers’ current report. The global computer market is also being negatively influenced by the uncertainties caused by the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. In addition, the industry is still suffering from disruptions in the supply chains, and there are also the corona-related lockdowns in China. At least with regard to the last two factors, Counterpoint Research expects the situation to ease slightly in the second half of 2022. According to Tim Cook, Apple, on the other hand, expects delivery problems to continue in the coming quarters and even years, albeit of different magnitudes.
