Manchester United: Coach Solskjaer apparently before the dismissal – Conte and Zidane on the list

The day after one of the worst bankruptcies in Manchester United history, there wasn’t much going on at the Red Devils training ground. The players and coaching team had time off, that was before 0: 5 against Liverpool so decided by coach Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer himself showed up anyway, the Norwegian stayed there for almost three hours around noon. The English tabloid media immediately speculated wildly as to whether he had to report to the club bosses and had to vacate his locker.

The fact is: Solskjaer is still the coach of Manchester United. There was a crisis meeting on Monday, but without any consequences for the coach – at least not for the time being.

And Solskjaer wasn’t there either. Club owners Joel and Avram Glazer discussed the precarious situation with CEO Ed Woodward and CEO Richard Arnold. The outcome of the meeting is open, but the bosses are apparently moving away from Solskjaer.

Manchester United Board of Directors moves away from Solskjaer

The newspapers “Daily Mail” and “The Sun” report that the 48-year-old is only allowed to continue until a suitable successor has been found. That could happen later this week.

Glazer and Co. stood behind Solskjaer for a long time, and it wasn’t until July that his contract was extended by three years. There were never any critical remarks about the coach on the part of the board of directors.

Rather, Solskjaer’s work has been very much appreciated in recent years. In purely tabular form, under Solskjaer, sporting progress can also be seen. Sixth, third, second – these are the Red Devils’ final placements in the Premier League since 2019.

But those in charge are realizing that Manchester United has been chasing after the top teams of the Premier League in vain despite player investments of 450 million euros in the past three years.

Tactical deficits compared to Klopp, Guardiola and Tuchel

So far, the fans have also stuck to Solskjaer, who has enjoyed hero status since his winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final against FC Bayern Munich. They take the view that the club would have much bigger problems, namely the diffuse management structure with the unloved US owners at the top.

But the supporters are also gradually losing patience, especially after the embarrassing 0: 5 against arch rivals Liverpool. During the half-time break, Solskjaer was insulted when he went into the dressing room.

And the players also have increasing doubts that the coach is still the right one. Behind closed doors, Solskjaer find tactical mistakes and a lack of leadership skills.

TV expert and ex-United player Gary Neville has recently criticized the fact that Solskjaer could never, tactically, keep up with Jürgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola or Thomas Tuchel.

Antonio Conte and Zinedine Zidane: Big names available immediately

Solskjaer is heavily counted and has to really fear for his job for the first time this day. Especially since the coaching market certainly has candidates who can show great success and who have also asserted themselves with top European clubs.

According to media reports, four names are on the shortlist of United bosses: Antonio Conte, Zinédine Zidane, Brendan Rodgers (Leicester City) and Eric ten Hag (Ajax Amsterdam).

Conte and Zidane have been unemployed since the summer. Conte ended his engagement with Inter Milan, Zidane quit his service with Real Madrid. Both would therefore be available immediately.

Alfredo Pedulla, journalist with the “Gazzetta dello Sport”, tweeted on Monday that Conte was already in contact with United and would like to get started right away. Conte has Premier League experience, in 2017 he led Chelsea to the championship title.

Eric ten Hag: Ideal solution from Amsterdam?

Zidane is interesting for every top club in Europe because of his impressive collection of titles with Real Madrid. In addition, Zidane indicated in previous interviews that he could very well imagine working in the Premier League one day.

Another candidate is said to be Rodgers. The Northern Irishman has coached Leicester City since 2019 and led the Foxes to the FA Cup title last season. In addition, Leicester won the English Supercup against champions Manchester City in August.

However, Rodgers has a Liverpool past. Between 2012 and 2015 he was the head coach of the Reds before Jürgen Klopp took over in October 2015. An ex-coach of the hated rival would be difficult to convey to United fans.

In this regard, Eric ten Hag has much better cards. The Dutchman has been in charge of Ajax Amsterdam on the sidelines since December 2017, has won two Dutch championships and led his team to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019, where Ajax’s dream of the final in the second leg against Tottenham Hotspur collapsed in the third minute of stoppage time.

Ten Hag stands for exciting offensive football with young, highly talented players. Just last week, Borussia Dortmund was dismantled into its individual parts in the CL group game in Amsterdam with a 4-0 win.

Gary Neville doesn’t believe in breaking up with Solskjaer

So far, however, there is hardly anything concrete apart from name dropping and as long as this is not the case, Solskjaer can continue. Gary Neville believes that this will continue to be the case.

“United need fresh impetus, but I’m sure that Ole will stay until the end of the season. United had bad experiences with Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal when they were both fired during the season. Now they are afraid of making the same mistakes again and I could even imagine that Ole will still be the coach next season – provided he wins a title. “

After the last performance shown with the embarrassment against Liverpool as a temporary low, nobody can believe it at the moment.
