Marine Le Pen to hold presidential election in France in 2022: report

| |

(Bloomberg) – Right-wing French leader Marine Le Pen plans to run for the third time in the 2022 presidential election, Le Figaro newspaper reported on Thursday.

The leader of the National Rally Party and the daughter of the French far-right party founder, Jean-Marie Le Pen, told reporters that on Thursday she would prepare for the campaign during an event in Nanterre near Paris, Le Figaro said.

Marine Le Pen’s decision to reassert itself has been challenged by populist leaders.

Le Pen was defeated by French President Emmanuel Macron in the second round of the 2017 elections when she received about a third of the vote. The two best candidates in the first round will be selected in the French system. Macron’s five-year term ends in spring 2022.
