Mario Götze and PSV Eindhoven win the Europa League

Nafter conceding a memorable goal from around 50 meters Mario Götze and PSV Eindhoven averted an embarrassing defeat on Cyprus and achieved their first victory in the Europa League this season. The 28-year-old world champion hero from 2014 made up a 0: 1 deficit with the Dutch first division club on Thursday evening and ultimately won 2: 1 (1: 1) at FC Omonoia Nicosia.

The hosts, who are fourth in the domestic league, took the lead in the 29th minute thanks to Jordi Gómez. The Spaniard simply withdrew from his own half. Eindhoven goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo, on loan from RB Leipzig, had positioned himself far in front of his box and could no longer catch the ball while running backwards. Donyell Malen equalized before the break (40th). It was he who made the decision in the second minute of stoppage time and put PSV in second place in Group E.

AS Roma also had a hard time. At home it was only enough to score a zero against CSKA Sofia. The SSC Napoli came to a 1-0 (0-0) at Real Sociedad San Sebastian. Arsenal FC had much less trouble – the Gunners prevailed 3-0 (2-0) against FC Dundalk.

One of the biggest embarrassments on matchday two was the defeat of Tottenham Hotspur at FC Antwerp. With 0: 1 (0: 1) the team of star coach José Mourinho lost to the Belgians. “We can only accuse ourselves and praise our opponents,” stated the 57-year-old Portuguese. For Mourinho, according to the BBC, it is the first bankruptcy in the Europa League since November 2016. Lior Refaeov scored the only goal.
