While the deputies were debating the programming law of the Ministry of the Interior (Lopmi) on Tuesday evening, the international news of the evening caused a suspension of the session.
The news took the elected officials present Tuesday on the benches of the Hemicycle by surprise. While the deputies have been debating since Monday the programming law of the Ministry of the Interior (Lopmi), the information of an explosion which caused two deaths in the east of Poland – which could come from Russian missiles – caused a disturbance in the parliamentary discussions. It is in this context that the boss of the LR deputies Olivier Marleix spoke at the start of the evening. “With regard to a territory, a country that is a member of the European Union, a member of NATO, I believe that it would obviously be entirely desirable for the government, as soon as possible, to keep the Assembly informed national information it has on this ongoing crisis“, he urged before the national representation.
A request which was followed by a brief suspension of the session – time necessary for the Vice-President of the National Assembly Valérie Rabault to meet with the President of the Palais Bourbon Yaël Braun-Pivet. The elected Yvelines had to make contact, according to the elected Nupes, with the Prime Minister. In the process, the government, first represented on the bench by the Secretary of State in charge of Citizenship, responded to the interpellation of the LR deputy with a message from Elisabeth Borne. “The government is following the situation on the ground very closely in conjunction with our Polish allies, in particular to assess the situation. In any case, Poland can count on the solidarity of France“, read Sonia Backès, smartphone in hand. The member of the government also warned that the executive would come back to the Lower House as soon as it had more details to give. Thus allowing parliamentary debates around the “Lopmi” to resume.
“When Olivier Marleix asked for an explanation, a latent concern rose in the Hemicycle. But we quickly returned to the text (Lopmi)”, informed a right-wing deputy to the Figaro. “We wanted to raise the subject at the start of the session… Everyone was attentive and agreed with our request. Since then, we have gone back to the debates but we see that there are discussions aside between colleagues on the subject”, adds a colleague of the Republicans. In a press release, the leader of the LFI deputies Mathilde Panot also asked that “national representation (that is) informed as soon as possible of developments in the situation and of the information available to the government.“For his part, Emmanuel Macron, in Bali, Indonesia for the G20, a “contacted the Polish authorities”, according to the Élysée on Tuesday evening. The president of the Republic “explore the possibility of a discussion as soon as (Wednesday) morning at the level of the leaders” pour “analyze the risks” et to prevent an escalation of the conflict».
