They were together for a lifetime. And when the virus came, they went together. Within just one day. These are the touching stories of two married couples from the Milan area who fell victim to Corona this November.
Vincenzo M. * († 83) and Olga († 82) were careful. “They hardly went out of the house because they were afraid of being infected,” her granddaughter Katia told the “Eco di Bergamo”. The grandfather only went shopping or to the pharmacy.
And yet it happens: The couple from Sesto San Giovanni (I) contract the corona virus. First the man gets sick, then the woman. You have a high fever. Nevertheless, the doctor only prescribed antibiotics for them, the granddaughter said. The seniors torment themselves for ten days. Then, on November 11th, they are admitted to a hospital in Monza. Each in a different room. For the first time in their married life, Vincenzo and Olga are separated.
Olga dies and Vincenzo follows her an hour later
“Leave me his jacket,” Olga pleaded with the carers, “so that I can feel his presence.” She fights for four days, then Olga dies. Only an hour later, Vincenzo follows her. It is Sunday afternoon, November 15th. It is the end of a great love that began 63 years ago. “My grandparents celebrated their wedding anniversary on September 26th,” says granddaughter Katia. They were as in love as on the first day.
“You don’t go alone”
Ugo C. and his wife Graziella, both 89 years old, cannot separate the virus either. The two former teachers have been married for 65 years. You have four children, ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild – and a full life. That will be destroyed in early November. The couple becomes infected.
When Graziella is picked up by the ambulance, Ugo bursts into tears. He holds her hand tightly and promises: “You will not go alone”. One day after his wife was admitted to the Niguarda hospital in Milan, Ugo C. also collapsed. He comes to another corona hospital, many kilometers away from his wife.
On November 10th, two more deaths line up in the statistics of Italy. It’s Ugo and Graziella. Died the same day, just a few hours in a row.
