Maryland police officer shot down trying to arrest fugitive

PITTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — A Maryland police officer was shot dead while trying to arrest a fugitive, authorities said.

Officer Glenn Hilliard spotted the suspect, wanted for multiple felony charges, leaving a residential complex in Pittsville, Maryland, police said. The subject tried to escape, there was a pursuit and Hilliard was shot down as he tried to arrest the subject.

“After an extensive operation with a large number of agents from throughout the region, the suspect was captured and will be handed over to the courts,” the police said in a press release.

Hilliard had been with the force for 16 years and would have turned 42 in the next few days, the agency added.

“The next few days will be difficult, but for now, we mourn the death of an incredible human being,” said the entity.

“Officer Glenn Hilliard was the son, husband, and father of three beautiful children, a brother to his peers, and an exemplary public servant to the citizens of Wicomico County and the State of Maryland. Our prayers are with the members of Glenn’s family in these difficult times.”
