Antwerp reacted via a press release on Tuesday to rumors circulating on social networks about the quarantine period of new coach Frank Vercauteren returned by private jet from Russia but also of six players. Dieumerci Mbokani, Nana Ampomah, Guy Mbenza, Cristian Benavente, Martin Hongla and Junior Pius have traveled abroad despite directives from the club clearly advising against leaving the country.
Antwerp has confirmed that they “will have to spend some time in quarantine depending on their return date”. It is more than likely that they will not be available for the league game at FC Mechelen on Sunday.
The Antwerp club intends to stress that it is correctly applying the protocol related to the coronavirus. The club say they “attach great importance to social responsibility, safety and health” and follow as closely as possible government rules and agreed Pro League protocols.
The new trainer Frank Vercauteren has been “quarantined after his medical and administrative obligations which go hand in hand with the start of a new job,” said management. “He will not direct the training sessions or take a place on the sidelines until all the obligations have been fulfilled.”
