Dmitry Medvedev urged to tighten the law on foreign agents
Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev called for tougher penalties for foreign agents. In his opinion, it is necessary to introduce criminal prosecution of persons working for another state.
“If they are engaged in activities directed against the country in such a difficult period, and receive money from our enemies for this, the response must be quick and tough. Stop talking nonsense, especially during the period of a special operation and unlimited anti-Russian sanctions. And at the legislative level, a more precise classification and stricter liability of foreign agents should be introduced,” Medvedev wrote in his telegram channel.
He clarified that the relevant bill has already been submitted to the State Duma. Medvedev also recalled legislative initiatives against extremism and terrorism. For persons working in the interests of a foreign state, he proposed to introduce a ban on public activities and criminal prosecution. Medvedev clarified that at the moment Russian law does not consider foreign agents to be criminals.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin explained the meaning of the law on foreign agents. He recalled that it was invented in the United States in the 1930s. It is designed to protect the country from interference in political life by other states, recalls channel 360. In Russia, the State Duma adopted a lawwhich allows to recognize media as foreign agents, in 2017.
