Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev will be a rival of Serb Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s men’s singles final at the Australian Open.
In the second semifinal, as a seed four, he defeated the tournament six of the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 6: 4, 6: 2 and 7: 5. Medvedev has stretched the winning streak to 20 matches and will play for the grand slam title for the second time in his career.
In 2019, he lost in the US Open final to Spaniard Rafael Nadal after a five hundred fight. The Russian is in excellent shape, at the end of last season he triumphed at the championship tournament in London and at the Masters 1000 event in Paris. In Melbourne this year, he did not find a winner at the ATP Cup either, where he won a valuable trophy for Russia alongside Andrei Rublov.
Medvedev gave a concentrated performance against Tsitsipas. He served well, made a minimum of unforced errors in exchanges, his strokes were of ideal length. In the opening act, Tsitsipasa broke at 2: 2 and in the tenth game, he turned the fourth set in a row at his own service. Tsitsipas didn’t do well with the one-handed backhand, which was his big weapon in the quarter-final turn against Nadal.
In the second act, Medvedev took the Greek service for the first time at 1: 1, when he showed two winners along the line. In the seventh game, he broke the opponent’s serve again and subsequently sealed the profit of the second set with a clean game.
At the beginning of the third set, Medvedev quickly bounced back to Tsitsipas to 3: 1. Strongly encouraged by the fans, the Greek came to life in the next minutes, turned to 4: 3 and at 5: 4 led Medvedev 30: 0. However, the Russian won four fifts in a row and with a score of 5: 5, after an excellent throw from a difficult position, he managed a decisive break. In the twelfth game, he used the first swordball and adjusted the mutual balance with Tsitsipas to 6: 1.
He suffered the only loss last year in the final performance in the group stage of the championship tournament, when he already had some progress to the semifinals.
Men’s Singles Semifinals:
