Mega trial against the ‘Ndrangheta starts in Italy

A trial against around 350 alleged members and helpers of the mafia organization ‘Ndrangheta begins on Wednesday in southern Italy. The trial is likely to be one of the largest mafia trials in the country for decades. Experts speak of a signal from the state: It can demonstrate strength against organized crime. You expect the process to take one to two years.

A building was specially prepared for the negotiations in the city of Lamezia Terme in Calabria and opened at the end of 2020. The accused are accused of belonging to the Mafia, murder, illegal possession of weapons, drug trafficking, extortion, usury of money and much more. Around 900 witnesses are expected, including former Mafia people who are ready to break the so-called law of silence. According to media reports, around 90 other defendants opted for an express trial. For them it should start on January 27th in court.
