Maybach presents its S-Class two months after meeting the Mercedes-Benz
Its wheelbase is 18 centimeters longer for passenger comfort
It is the maximum expression of luxury in Daimler’s representative saloons
The second generation of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is presented to the world in November 2020, two months after Mercedes-Benz introduced the seventh generation of its representative saloon. It extends its wheelbase by 18 centimeters and is equipped with a higher level of comfort – including noise cancellation technology in the cabin – to establish itself as the Daimler benchmark in rolling luxury.
If the new Lessons It was already a technological and aspirational leap in the hands of Mercedes-Benz, now it is Maybach who has reinterpreted the saloon to take it to its maximum expression. The result is an alternative to Rolls-Royce Ghost and to Bentley Flying Spur. From Germany they expect it to be as successful as the outgoing generation, of which 60,000 copies have been sold since its commercial launch in 2015. As a curiosity, in 2019 a unit was sold in China every 15 minutes.
The new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is a declaration of intent for Daimler, because it marks the first launch since the German giant announced that it is in the premium segment where it sees more room for growth at the business level. During his presentation, CEO Ola Kaellenius said that they expect Maybach to double its sales in the near future.
The outgoing generation of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is available in Spain from 154,500 euros. The new model presented in November 2020 starts at $ 173,000 – price for Spain not confirmed – but includes multiple options that can quickly increase the final amount, such as a set of champagne glasses valued at $ 3,200. The first units will arrive in dealerships during the spring of 2021.
MERCEDES-MAYBACH S-CLASS 2021: EXTERIOR
The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is characterized by having a wheelbase 18 centimeters greater than that of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, going from 3.21 to 3.39 meters for the sole and exclusive benefit of the rear row occupants, who gain more than generous legroom.
This data places the Maybach right between the two bodies of the new Rolls-Royce Ghost, which has a wheelbase of 3.30 meters in its short version and 3.47 meters in the extended variant. Mercedes has not confirmed the rest of the vehicle’s specifications, although the S-Class registers 5.29 meters in length – it remains to be confirmed how the extra 18 centimeters impact -, a width of 1.98 and a height of 1.50.
The new Maybach S-Class maintains the characteristic grille of the outgoing generation, although the grilles now adopt a vertical arrangement instead of being horizontal. The name ‘Maybach’ comes to preside over the front axle, inscribed right at the foot of the Mercedes star. His signature emblem also features an embellished C-pillar for further distinction from his brother.
Especially striking is the treatment that the manufacturer has given to the lower air intakes of the front axle, which have an attractive silver and chrome finish that differs from that seen on the grille. In the same way, the optical group is sharpened considerably in line with the solution that Mercedes-Benz already presented with the seventh generation of its S-Class.
Customers who wish can request a two-tone exterior paint for their Maybach S-Class, with a dividing line connecting the headlamps to the taillights and running around the contour of the windows. From Germany they interpret this option as the top of the range of the model, hence the paint is applied by hand with specialists who dedicate a week of work to it.
Mercedes-Maybach has also introduced what it calls ‘comfort doors’. Basically, the opening of the rear doors is automatic. The driver can operate them remotely with a physical command. The passenger can also open it at will with a key. Once inside the car, a gesture recognition system also allows it to be closed automatically. The system is only activated if it detects that there is no risk of collision with other vehicles or objects.
MERCEDES-MAYBACH CLASE S 2021: INTERIOR
With a 3.39 centimeter wheelbase, the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class gains 18 centimeters over the conventional S-Class. This space is transferred solely and exclusively to the rear row, in such a way that passengers have more space to make it their mobile office or simply their private oasis. The wheelbase is longer than in the conventional Rolls-Royce Ghost, although 8 centimeters shorter than its extended body.
One of the main novelties of the new Maybach S-Class is the introduction of a new noise cancellation technology, operating at speeds of between 20 and 180 kilometers / hour, which counteracts incoming sound in just 3 milliseconds in order to provide an environment silent. The system works based on six acceleration sensors mounted on the suspension, which allow it to ‘read’ the road and auditory neutralize its vibrations. The brand hasn’t provided decibel figures, but has compared the feeling of being inside to wearing high-end music headphones.
The Maybach S-Class can incorporate up to five digital displays inside, just like the original S-Class. Two are located in the front axle. They are a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel with 3D effect and a 12.8-inch OLED screen that presides over the center console, with a layout very similar to that found in the Mercedes-Benz saloon. Rear seat occupants have three screens at their disposal. Two are behind the front seats, while the third is on the center palm rest.
The German brand has arranged a total of 253 led lights throughout the cabin as ambient light. The seats are a twist on those seen in the conventional S-Class, with specific motifs and finishes to position them as the top of the range. The wood is used as a trim and covers the back of the front seats. As an option, the buyer can request a similar finish for the dividing area between the two rear seats. A nappa leather finish is also available.
As an option, it can include a refrigerator that stores drinks at temperatures between 1 and 7 degrees Celsius. The refrigerator is installed between the two rear seats.
Rear row occupants can also benefit from MBUX Interior Assist technology, which includes gesture recognition to enhance their in-car experience. When the doors are opened, the head restraints are raised and the seat belt moves closer to the passengers to facilitate maneuvering. When the car is put in motion, the headrests on the empty seats contract. In the event that the passenger seat is empty and the rear seat is occupied, the front seat automatically moves forward to free up even more space.
The Maybach S-Class includes a special light designed to make reading easier. Just bring your hand close to it to activate it. From then on, the car will follow the movement of the passenger by redirecting the light beam based on the movement of their hands.
MERCEDES-MAYBACH S-CLASS 2021: EQUIPMENT
The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will have level 3 autonomous driving technology from the second half of 2021. This technology, known as Drive Pilot, will be available on highways with heavy traffic and will be able to take control of the vehicle at speeds of up to 60 kilometers / hour, which is the current legal limit for these resources in Germany. The instrument panel has cameras that monitor the driver to check that he is not sleeping. If the moment arrives the driver is not able to take control, the car automatically brakes to a stop.
The Maybach S-Class will incorporate an intelligent parking assistant that the brand defines as level 4 autonomous driving technology.
MERCEDES-MAYBACH S-CLASS 2021: MECHANICAL
Mercedes has not confirmed the engine specifications of the new Maybach S-Class.
The outgoing generation featured a 4.0-liter turbo V4 and a 6.0-liter biturbo V6.
The V4 engine gave rise to the S 560 and the S560 4MATIC, with 469 horsepower in both cases and a nine-speed automatic transmission in the second case.
The V6 engine was reserved for the S 650, with 630 horsepower, rear wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission.
MERCEDES-MAYBACH S-CLASS 2021: PRICES
The price of the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class 2021 for Spain has not yet been confirmed, although its presentation has revealed that the model will start from $ 173,000. At the current exchange rate, that’s about 146,000 euros. In any case, the Spanish price is likely to be higher while the outgoing generation starts at 154,500.
It should be noted that this is the price of access. The car can be significantly more expensive depending on the tastes of the buyer, who can raise the final amount above the barrier of 200,000 euros. Among its options, a set of champagne glasses valued at $ 3,200 stands out as a curiosity.
