Meredith Monk. A tribute to her 80th birthday | MI | 23 11 2022 | 17:30

“Meredith Monk – composer, singer, director, choreographer and creator of new operas, musical theater works, films and installations – was born on November 20, 1942 in New York City. She is considered one of the most unique and influential artists of our time and is a pioneer , which is now referred to as “extended vocal technique” and “interdisciplinary performance”.

Monk creates works that thrive at the intersection of the two idioms, discovering and weaving new modes of perception. Her pioneering exploration of the voice as an instrument, as an eloquent language in and of itself, pushes the boundaries of musical composition and creates soundscapes that evoke feelings, energies and memories.” (ECM)

The continent of Meredith Monk can hardly be defined better than in this official press release. And yet you only get a sense of her holistic understanding of art when you listen to her or watch her videos and films. But probably all this is nothing compared to the live experience of one of their performances.

So now we have a valuable treasure, twelve CDs in a box, a booklet with 300 (!) pages containing excellent texts and pictures that bring us closer to this artist who, like no other before her, radically explored the realm of the voice and artistically went completely new ways. And thus opened up so many other worlds.
