Merz: No coup at party conference – leaves K-question unanswered

| |

Berlin – ex-Union faction leader Friedrich Merz has rejected speculation that he is planning a coup at the CDU party congress later this month. In an interview with the news site n-tv.de he also spoke out for the first time clearly against a primary election for Chancellor candidate of the Union. However, he considers regional conferences to be an appropriate means of making staff decisions for several applicants. In the evening, Merz said after a report by the "Passauer Neue Presse" in a panel discussion, a special party could decide on the chancellor candidate.
