The American Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, made this Thursday a unprecedented visit to an Israeli settlement in the West Bank and the Golan Heights, a testimony of the support that the government of Donald Trump has given to Israel in these four years.
For the first time, a secretary of state visited an Israeli settlement in the West Bank.
Specifically, Pompeo went to the Psagot vineyard, between Jerusalem and the Palestinian city of Ramallah, escorted by a major military device.
The Psagot winery sells most of its production abroad, especially in the United States and Europe and he has a wine that he gave the name of Pompeo, to thank the US official for his support of the Israeli settlements.
“The vines of the Israeli vineyards in this place tell a story of 2,000 years, that of the relationship of a people and their land”said Pompeo’s team, after this visit, which was condemned by the Palestinian government.
Since Donald Trump came to the White House, the United States has shown unwavering support for Israel: has recognized Jerusalem as the capital and also the Israeli sovereignty in the Golan, conquered from Syria in the 1967 war and annexed in 1981.
“Imagine the risk it would pose to the West and Israel if this territory were under the control of (Syrian President Bashar al) Assad.”Pompeo declared during his historic visit.
In March 2019, the United States became the world’s first country to recognize Israeli sovereignty over this strategic territory, located on the border with Lebanon and Syria. The UN assured that the status of the Golan would remain the same.
“For a long time, the State Department held a wrong point of view on the colonies, not recognizing the history of this special territory. Today, the US State Department vigorously defends the recognition that colonies can be legal ”, Pompeo said Thursday in Jerusalem.
This Thursday, after visiting the winery, Pompey took a step forward Y announced that the United States will label exports from the West Bank colonies with the mention “Made in Israel,” Made in Israel.
Pompeo did not meet with any Palestinian leaders during this trip.
BDS is “anti-Semitic”
During your visit to Israel, Pompeo also announced that the United States will consider the BDS movement “anti-Semitic” (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions), who wants to isolate Israel internationally for the treatment it supposedly reserves for the Palestinians.
“The global BDS campaign against Israel will be considered anti-Semitic (…) We want to align ourselves with other nations that recognize the BDS movement for the cancer that it is”, Pompeo said.
In February, the secretary accused the UN of being “anti-Israel” following the dissemination of a list of companies that operate in Israeli colonies in Palestinian territory.
BDS is an international campaign of economic, cultural or scientific boycott against Israel that wishes to force an end to the colonization of the Palestinian territories.
Those who support or promote this movement follow the example of South Africa, where, according to them, the boycott of the country contributed to the end of apartheid.
