A 20-storey residential building in Milan was devastated by a major fire on Sunday. According to the fire brigade, the fire broke out in the late afternoon in the upper floors of the building on the southern outskirts and then ate its way to the lower floors. Apparently there were no victims.
The approximately 70 families who lived in the building had been contacted by phone. “There are no reports of missing people,” said the fire department.
The firefighters went from apartment to apartment and smashed the doors to make sure that no one was in the apartments, said Milan’s Mayor Giuseppe Sala the “Corriere della Sera”. The authorities are confident that the residents will be able to escape the flames in good time.
According to the newspaper, around 20 tenants suffered light smoke inhalation. The fire brigade was in action with dozens of fire engines.
