Palm Beach Millions of Americans are at risk of losing unemployment benefits because the outgoing US President Donald Trump does not want to approve the corona aid package decided by the US Congress after months of negotiations. Without the president’s signature, the right to aid will expire on Saturday for around 14 million citizens. Trump surprisingly refused to sign the bill on Tuesday after the White House had previously signaled approval. The draft is currently ready for signature at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The president played golf at the West Palm Beach Club on Friday: A person familiar with his activities said Trump had been to the golf course with his close ally Senator Lindsey Graham.
The corona aid of almost $ 900 billion is part of a 2.3 trillion legislative package. Around 1.4 trillion of this is earmarked for regular government spending. Since these funds have also been blocked so far, the partial closure of authorities threatens from Tuesday. Trump had criticized parts of the draft as wasteful.
The president’s staff were surprised by his rejection of the bill, said a person familiar with the process. The further procedure is unclear. Trump could still approve of the aid and state funds, as he had not explicitly threatened with a veto.
