Minister Diego Molano delivers new details of the operation in Putumayo – Conflict and Drug Trafficking – Justice

Different sectors continue to question the military operation in which eleven people died in the department of Putumayo.

Defense Minister Diego Molano gave new details of the military operation.

The official stated at a press conference that it was a legitimate operation planned five months before give the green light for its development.

He indicated that the intelligence of the Navy had precise information on the presence of illegal groups in the area and the activities they had been carrying out on drug trafficking issues.

On the other hand, he said that the purpose was to carry out an arrest warrant and that all the protocols of International Humanitarian Law were complied with.

He also stated that the inhabitants of the region had been frightened by the fighting between the 48th front and the ‘Carolina Ramírez’ front.

The commander of the Armed Forces, General Luis Fernando Navarro, supported the thesis that the protocols for this type of operation were complied with and that it was about affecting an illegal network that had been committing crimes in the region.

He added that the Prosecutor’s Office, the Attorney General’s Office and the military criminal justice system will be in charge of establishing what happened in the operation.

General Óscar Alexander Tovar, legal chief of the Army, said that an alert had been reported in the area for 454 victims of antipersonnel mines in two years, which would be the responsibility of the illegal groups that are present in the region.

He indicated that the ‘Comandos de la Frontera’ are allies of the former guerrilla leader ‘Iván Márquez’.
