The New York Yankees have been playing some good ball with rookie Oswaldo Cabrera, despite never having played in the minor league outfield.

Cabrera is a second baseman, but he has transitioned seamlessly onto the field, providing elite defensive metrics. In fact, through 223 innings on the field, Cabrera has a perfect fielding percentage and nine above-average defensive runs saved.

Right now, it seems impossible to get him out of the lineup, especially since he’s taken over on offense lately. On the season, he’s averaging .233. with a 30.1% batting rate, including four home runs, 17 RBIs, and two stolen bases. He has struck out 27.1%, but is also walking 9%.

In the month of September, Cabrera is hitting .232 with a batting rate of 31.6% and a batting percentage of .464. He has played a pivotal role in the Yankees’ current seven-game winning streak. In his last seven days, Cabrera is hitting .348 with a 36.4% batting rate, with three home runs and nine RBIs.

Can the Yankees trust him in the playoffs?

Despite these incredible metrics, reports indicate that if Andrew Benintendi is able to return from his wrist injury, Cabrera could end up missing out on a playoff roster spot.

Realistically, Benintendi isn’t going to be fully healthy for the rest of the season, which means they’ll have to settle for a demoted version of the 28-year-old outfielder. Benintendi hit .320 with a 38.7% on-base percentage with Kansas City in 93 games, but hit just .254 with a 33% on-base percentage with the Yankees in 33 games.

If you currently have to choose between the two, Cabrera seems like the obvious choice, especially as they see it as a long-term solution, while Benintendi will be a free agent after the 2022 season.
