A milestone on the way to the upper arms of the Swiss people at risk: trucks from Belgium delivered the first 200,000 doses of Moderna’s corona vaccine to the army pharmacy yesterday. Just one day after the therapeutic products authority Swissmedic approved the second corona vaccine for Switzerland.
Lonza in Visp VS produced the active ingredient for the vaccine. Before the army could accept it in pharmaceutical cans, the liquid rolled exactly 3,902 kilometers across Europe at minus 70 degrees. The logistics company Kuehne + Nagel is responsible for deliveries from Valais through five countries and back to Switzerland. Everything happens by land.
No request concert from the cantons
First the medical cargo arrives in Madrid, where the company Rovi fills the active ingredient. The finished cans then travel to a distribution center of the logistics company in Belgium – the starting point for distribution to the countries on the European continent.
Can the cantons determine whether they can get more doses of the vaccine from the US company Moderna, which requires less refrigeration, but is only released from the age of 18? Or whether you prefer the Biontech / Pfizer vaccine, which can be injected from the age of 16, but is stored colder and is therefore more difficult to distribute?
No, the federal government does not want a request concert and, as with the quantities, relies on a strict distribution key. “All cantons get the same shares in Pfizer and Moderna,” says Katrin Holenstein from the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). Measured against the population and the number of people at risk.
Zug receives Moderna cans today
The next milestone: Today the coveted vaccinations are already on their way again, including to the canton of Zug. As with Biontech / Pfizer, the central Swiss cantons that rely on the logistics company Galliker are also stepping on the gas with Moderna.
“In the Zug vaccination center in Baar, the Moderna vaccination doses will be vaccinated from Saturday,” says Aurel Köpfli from the health department of the Canton of Zug. The mobile vaccination team, which coordinates the vaccinations in old people’s and nursing homes, will also use Moderna. The priority vaccination group will be immunized with both vaccines.
Patchwork quilts in cantons
In the canton of Zurich, which receives the first Moderna cans on Saturday, there is a breakdown. “The general practitioners will receive the vaccine from Moderna from the beginning of next week,” explains Lina Lanz from the Zurich Health Directorate. The retirement and nursing homes as well as the care facilities for people with disabilities, the hospitals and the EBPI vaccination center received Biontech / Pfizer. Lucerne is informing today about its distribution process, other cantons will follow.
