Monkey pox: avoid sex during symptoms, the recommendation of the British authorities

The epidemic of monkeypox or monkey pox is experiencing an outbreak in the United Kingdom. The authorities are distilling advice to limit the spread of the virus in the country.

People positive for monkeypox must isolate themselves to limit contamination. The authorities have just published a list of recommendations for health professionals and the general public.

A list of recommendations

The top priority for infected people is to limit contact. Once only the lesions have healed and “the scabs have dried”, the positive case can resume a normal social life. It is also recommended to wash your belongings with traditional detergents, as well as bed sheets.

A more incongruous but all in all quite logical measure is also mentioned by the health authorities. “Cases should also abstain from sexual intercourse when symptomatic, including during the period of early symptom onset, and when lesions are present,” the specialists say.

Use of condoms

It is also recommended to “use condoms for 8 weeks after infection”, although “there is currently no evidence of monkeypox in genital excreta.”

If positive cases have to travel to see a specialist, then it is strongly advised to “ensure that any lesions are covered with a cloth, wear a mask and avoid public transport as far as possible.” Contact cases of monkeypox are also asked to self-isolate for a period of 21 days, “if necessary.”
