The World Health Organization is on alert for cases of monkeypox detected in the United Kingdom since May 6. Added to these infections are those found in the United States, Spain and Portugal.

According to the National Institute of Health (INS) of Colombia, this disease is a POX-type virus that can be transmitted by many animals and infections that occur in humans occur specifically when a human enters the animal’s natural habitat.

According to the INS, early detection is very important to break a chain of transmission. When the virus reaches organs of the human body such as the brain or lungs, it can cause death, but a death is more likely to occur in a thousand cases than in a few cases.

The entity mentioned that it is not a new virus, however, its origin is mainly in monkeys. And although the monkey virus may cause public concern, a virus like Measles is hundreds of times more likely and more serious because it is highly contagious.
It is important to remember that there are cases of measles in the United States, Brazil and Venezuela. It also spreads efficiently from man to man through the respiratory tract.
In Colombia, the work focuses on fine-tuning the Public Health Surveillance System.
The INS has reinforced monitoring of diseases or outbreaks that cause rashes or skin eruptions.
In addition, the entity also carried out an analysis of the situation with the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is developing a surveillance guideline for health services.

The efforts are oriented towards the better functioning and permanent response of the surveillance system rather than the concern of the people.. In fact, although there is a probability of contagion of monkey pox or ‘monkeypox’, the importation of a case of measles is more likely.
