Police officers stand at the entrance to ING headquarters on Bijlmerdreef in Amsterdam on February 13, 2020 after a bomb letter exploded
AMSTERDAM, February 13 (Reuters). A letter bomb caught fire in a bank in Amsterdam on Thursday. Another was disarmed in an office near Utrecht. This was the last of a series of such attacks in the Netherlands this week. A spokeswoman for the bank said no one was injured in the incident at an ING Bank Amsterdam branch, although the police said one person inhaled smoke.
“It didn’t explode, it caught fire,” said police spokesman Rob van der Veen.
The police disarmed a letter bomb in an office of the US information technology company Unisys near Utrecht. Nobody was injured. The police said they “made the letter harmless” and were investigating a team from Amsterdam.
This year, several letter bombs were sent to companies in the Netherlands. No injuries were reported.
Police believe the two letters that harmlessly exploded this week in the post offices of Dutch bank ABN Amro and Japanese printer Ricoh are linked to letters sent to seemingly random business locations across the country in early January.
These included two hotels, a gas station, a real estate agent and a car dealership. None of the previous letters detonated.
Police say the person who sends the dangerous letters demands that an undisclosed ransom in Bitcoin be paid.
In Spain, the headquarters of the American online retailer Amazon.com Inc AMZN.O in Madrid was evacuated on Thursday after a bomb hazard, the police said. There was no evidence that the incident was related to the Dutch letter bombs. (Reporting by Toby Sterling; editing by John Stonestreet and Giles Elgood)
