The US space agency “NASA” launched the spacecraft “Dart” into space on Tuesday night from California, on a mission that seeks to protect Earth from the threat of an asteroid threatening it.
NASA is engaged in an experimental and defensive mission, aimed at protecting the Earth from a small moon and an asteroid that threatens it. By launching the Dart spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket, owned by SpaceX.
According to Science Alert, the spacecraft will head towards a pair of asteroids, one of which is a small moon called Demorphos, and the other is an asteroid called Didymos. According to Sky News.
The source explained that the small moon is about the size of a football field, and Dart is expected to reach it in September 2022. Meanwhile, Ed Reynolds, director of the Dart project at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, said during a press conference held on Monday. “We will hit her hard, but we will hit her with a very small vehicle.”
“This is a test,” said Lindley Johnson, Planetary Defense Officer. We don’t want to be in a situation where an asteroid is heading towards Earth and then we have to test that kind of ability.” If the mission succeeds, Dart will prove that technology can alter the paths of dangerous asteroids.
