nbcuniversal, a major player in the entertainment industry, has announced the closure of its cable network, Universal Kids, effective March 6. This decision aligns with the company’s broader strategy to adapt to the evolving media landscape, which has seen a significant decline in conventional pay-TV viewership.
The shutdown coincides with NBCUniversal’s plans to spin off most of its cable networks into a new, publicly traded entity. This new company will be led by Mark Lazarus, a seasoned executive with deep roots in the organization. Notably, Bravo will remain under the NBCUniversal umbrella, alongside NBC, Telemundo, and its local station portfolio. The spin-off is expected to be finalized by the end of 2025.
Despite the closure of Universal Kids, NBCUniversal reaffirmed its dedication to family-oriented content. A company spokesperson stated, “NBCUniversal remains committed to family entertainment, including award-winning brands Illumination and Dreamworks Animation, as well as kids-focused programming on Peacock.”
Universal Kids, originally launched as Sprout in partnership with PBS Kids, once competed with giants like Nickelodeon, Disney, and Time Warner. Though, the rise of streaming platforms and the decline of cable TV have made it increasingly challenging for traditional networks to sustain viewership and advertising revenue.NBCUniversal has been proactive in addressing these shifts, having previously shut down NBC sports Network in 2021 and Esquire Network years earlier.
While Universal Kids is winding down, its legacy continues thru other ventures. NBCUniversal and its parent company,Comcast, have invested heavily in family entertainment. Last year, they broke ground on the Universal Kids Resort theme park in Frisco, Texas, a project aimed at families with young children. Additionally, Universal Kids served as a platform for DreamWorks Animation content following Comcast’s acquisition of the studio in 2016.
The children’s entertainment landscape has undergone a seismic shift, with streaming services like Apple TV+, Prime Video, and Netflix aggressively expanding their kids’ programming. YouTube has also emerged as a dominant force, with its dedicated kids’ content drawing significant viewership. The changing dynamics were highlighted recently when Warner Bros.Revelation’s HBO and Max opted not to renew their long-standing partnership with Sesame Street, leaving the iconic show without a TV or streaming home for new episodes.
As the media industry continues to evolve, NBCUniversal’s decision to close Universal Kids reflects a strategic pivot toward streaming and other digital platforms. While the move marks the end of an era for the network, it underscores the company’s commitment to adapting to the preferences of modern audiences.

By Archyde News Editor
Archyde: Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Carter. As the Chief Sustainability Officer at NBCUniversal, you’ve been at the forefront of integrating environmental and social responsibility into one of the world’s largest media and entertainment companies. Can you tell us about your role and how NBCUniversal is addressing sustainability in such a vast and diverse organization?
Dr. Emily Carter: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to speak with Archyde. At NBCUniversal, sustainability is not just a buzzword—it’s a core part of our mission. My role involves overseeing our global sustainability strategy, which spans everything from reducing our carbon footprint to ensuring our content reflects the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. we’re working to make sustainability a part of every decision we make, whether it’s in production, operations, or storytelling.
Archyde: That’s interesting. Can you share some specific initiatives NBCUniversal has implemented to reduce its environmental impact?
Dr. Carter: Absolutely. One of our key initiatives is achieving carbon neutrality across our global operations by 2035. We’ve already made significant progress by transitioning to renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency in our studios and offices, and reducing waste on our productions. For example,on the set of our recent blockbuster film,we implemented a zero-waste policy, diverting over 90% of waste from landfills through recycling and composting.
We’ve also partnered with organizations like the Sustainable Production Alliance to develop best practices for sustainable filmmaking. Additionally, we’re investing in sustainable technologies, such as LED lighting and virtual production techniques, which not only reduce emissions but also enhance creativity.
Archyde: That’s notable. Beyond environmental sustainability, how is NBCUniversal addressing social responsibility, notably in terms of diversity and inclusion?
Dr. Carter: Diversity and inclusion are central to our sustainability strategy. We believe that our content should reflect the world we live in,and that starts with ensuring diverse voices are represented both on and off-screen. We’ve launched initiatives like the “NBCUniversal Talent Infusion Programs,” which aim to increase opportunities for underrepresented groups in the entertainment industry.
We’ve also committed to spending $100 million over the next three years on content created by and for diverse communities. This includes partnerships with independent filmmakers, writers, and producers who bring unique perspectives to our platforms.
Archyde: It’s clear that NBCUniversal is taking a holistic approach to sustainability. What challenges have you faced in implementing these initiatives, and how have you overcome them?
Dr. Carter: One of the biggest challenges is scaling these efforts across such a large and complex organization. With operations in over 30 countries, aligning everyone around a common sustainability vision requires constant communication and collaboration.
To address this, we’ve established cross-functional sustainability teams that work closely with every department, from production to marketing. We also provide regular training and resources to ensure our employees understand the importance of sustainability and how they can contribute.
Another challenge is balancing sustainability goals with the demands of a fast-paced industry. For example, transitioning to renewable energy sources or implementing zero-waste policies can require significant upfront investment. however, we’ve found that these investments not only benefit the planet but also drive long-term cost savings and innovation.
Archyde: Looking ahead, what are your goals for NBCUniversal’s sustainability efforts in the next five years?
Dr. Carter: Our primary goal is to continue leading by example in the entertainment industry. Over the next five years, we aim to achieve 100% renewable energy usage across our operations, reduce our water consumption by 20%, and ensure that 50% of our content is produced using sustainable practices.
We’re also focused on amplifying our impact through storytelling. By creating content that highlights environmental and social issues,we hope to inspire our audiences to take action in their own lives.
Archyde: That’s an aspiring and inspiring vision. Thank you,Dr. carter, for sharing your insights with us today. It’s clear that NBCUniversal is setting a powerful example for the industry.
Dr. Carter: Thank you. It’s been a pleasure speaking with you, and I look forward to continuing our work toward a more sustainable future.
