The three-time Formula 1 champion Nelson Piquet not only made the wrong choice of words when talking about Lewis Hamilton, he also made disparaging remarks about the racing drivers Keke and Nico Rosberg.
The statements of former Formula 1 star Nelson Piquet still give a lot to talk about here at Silverstone. The British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC), owners of the traditional Silverstone racetrack, have since revoked the Brazilian’s honorary membership. The FIA has not confirmed that Piquet after his disparaging statements about Lewis Hamilton received a paddock ban. That is a matter for Formula 1, not a matter for the World Autosport Association, it said on request. It would be the first time that a Formula 1 world champion would be denied access to the paddock.
Lewis Hamilton is not the only driver to have been insulted by 69-year-old Piquet in the November 2021 vodcast “Motorsports Talk”. In this show, 23-time GP winner Piquet described his former rival Keke Rosberg as “worthless”, and he went one better: Keke’s son Nico Rosberg has only become world champion at Mercedes since 2016 because Hamilton was pretty bad that season drove and practically gave him, Nico, the butt – an unmistakably homophobic remark.
Martin Brundle is also stunned by the statements made by the Brazilian. From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, the Englishman drove against Piquet in the premier class. “I’ve known him for forty years,” says the British Sky GP expert. “He’s always been snotty, with innuendos about Nigel Mansell’s wife or Ayrton Senna.”
At the time, Piquet described his Williams stablemate Nigel Mansell as uneducated, his wife as ugly, and he also told Enzo Ferrari: “He’s senile.”
What Martin Brundle doesn’t understand: «Why on earth does Nelson have to say things like that? I’m disappointed in Nelson for feeling the need to express himself like that.”
