Directed by Marko Lastikka, the new studio based in Helsinki should allow Netflix to continue developing in the field of video games.

The streaming giant Netflix continues its development in the world of video games. The company has just opened a new in-house studio in Helsinkiin Finland.

Netflix’s games portfolio currently includes 31 mobile games. The platform wants to have 19 more by the end of the year.

The company sees games as a interesting diversification at a time when growth in the streaming market is slowing. In the second quarter, Netflix saw 970,000 subscribers leave its platform.

However, Netflix is still failing to convert its subscribers into players en masse. According to the financial channel CNBC, less than 1% of Netflix’s 221 million users are active on the gaming platform.

The investment in a fourth internal studio aims to strengthen this “games” branch. The new studio will be based in the Finnish capital Helsinki and directed by Marko Lastikka. The latter worked for more than five years for the game manufacturer Zynga, notably on the hit game FarmVille 3. Previously, he had co-founded Tracktwenty, a Finnish study of the American gaming giant Electronic Arts.

Netflix’s games portfolio currently includes 31 mobile games. They are only available to subscribers and are free of ads and in-app purchases. The platform wants to have 50 games by the end of the year. One of them will be “Stranger Things: Puzzle Games”, a game based on the hit series “Stranger Things”.
