“Netflix updates its account sharing policy in France: What you need to know”

Netflix announced on Tuesday May 23 that French users will have to pay, from May 24, an additional 5.99 euros per month if they want to share their account outside their home.

NETFLIX – Sharing at will is over. Since the middle of the week, Netflix has been charging French users an additional 5.99 euros per month to share their access codes with people who do not live with them. After this announcement, the first account terminations started to fall.

The rule enacted by Netflix and detailed on son site is the following : “ Anyone who is a member of your household, i.e. who lives with you and therefore shares your primary address, can use your Netflix account. In other words: if you can continue watching Netflix programs on multiple devices in your home (which can be handy when you have multiple people in your home using the same account, such as when you have roommates or teenagers with their own devices), you will no longer be able to share your account with your friends or family members for free if they do not live with you.

However, there are ways to continue sharing your account with outside relatives, or to watch Netflix moving. Le HuffPost explains everything point by point below.

How does the “Additional subscriber” option work?

On its help page dedicated to account sharingNetflix says that “Account holders with a Standard or Premium plan can share Netflix with people who don’t live with them by adding additional subscribers to their account”. To do this, “the account holder will need to purchase an additional Subscriber option and then invite someone to use it”. It’s up to you, then, with the person concerned, who will pay the additional 6 euros per month required to take advantage of this option…

This additional subscriber must imperatively “be activated in the country in which the account holder who invited him subscribed”. However, the possibility of adding an additional subscriber will not be available for the “Standard with ” and “Essential” offers, namely the cheapest Netflix subscription offers.

According the page dedicated to these additional subscribers, the option will also not be available on bundled offers to other streaming platforms (where Netflix access is included in a larger content offer package). Also keep in mind that the additional subscriber will only be able to watch Netflix videos at home on one screen at a time, without being able to share their access with others – even if they will have a new username and password, which will be created when activating this option.

Connect to home Wi-Fi to avoid blockages

If you try to escape this new rule and still share your password outside your home without paying the extra, the platform announces the color: “Devices that identify themselves to Netflix without being associated with your primary address may be blocked. »

To protect against any blocking, Netflix specifies that members associated with the main account must connect to the main account owner’s home Wi-Fi network, and watch at least one content every 31 days.

Checks carried out

In order to identify fraud, the streaming platform will geolocate each connection via its IP address. If a device located far from your home tries to connect, the platform will send an email to the owner of the main account who will have 15 minutes to confirm via a code that the user is indeed linked to the household. For offenders, apart from the blocking of accounts, no financial penalty is currently provided: “ Netflix will not automatically charge a fee”.

A temporary code if you are going on a trip

But what if you are traveling? If you leave your home for more than 31 days, to take advantage of your subscription, you will now have to ask Netflix to obtain a temporary code so that you can continue to watch films and series. This new password will be effective for seven consecutive days.
