In 2016, Marvel decided to explore a new comic book character: Ms. Marvel. This heroine, Kamala Khan by name, is very popular with Marvel readers. In 2019, the development of the series begins with Bisha K. Ali as head writer. Fans had to wait until June 8, 2022 to see the episodes release on Disney+.
Ms. Marvel is a series that honors Kamala Khan, a young teenager from Jersey City. Definitely not the most popular girl in her school, she spends her life with her best friend, Bruno Carrelli, dreaming of superheroes. The young heroine has a YouTube drawing channel on which she tells superhero stories, mainly Captain Marvel. Her talent as a designer is unfortunately not recognized.
It all kicks off when AvengerCon, a convention about superheroes, is held near her home. Kamala only talks about going there to enter a cosplay contest, but her parents disagree. She sneaks out of her house with her best friend to enter his contest. But during the evening, superpowers emanate from her, more precisely, bracelets that she inherited from her grandmother. From that moment, everything changes in Kamala’s life and mysteries of the past will emerge.
The innovations of the series
With its series, Marvel tries to set up new visual universes. In Ms. Marvel, it’s the comic book aspect that is in the spotlight. Indeed, we find it in different scenes: excerpts from Kamala’s YouTube channel or the text messages sent that appear in the decor in comic mode.
Kamala’s power is a kind of physical light that can take the necessary forms. In these scenes, the special effects are there, as often with Marvel, which is not at its first attempt.
Series values
Every Marvel hero gets support at one point or another in their journey, but in this series, solidarity is an essential element that unites the heroine with her friends and family. It is thanks to this value that Kamala manages to gain confidence in herself and her powers, that she manages to get out of the framework of the shy little girl who lives in her fads and dreams of superheroes.
