New November record – 6.2 degrees on the Jungfraujoch – Meteo

At high altitudes it was warm as never before in November. 6.2 degrees were measured on the Jungfraujoch. The zero degree limit in the free atmosphere also reached a new record today. The weather balloon probe only reached the frost mark at a little more than 4,200 meters above sea level.

November 2020 is constantly breaking records. November 2nd was the warmest November day ever recorded in Switzerland in memory. Today (Wednesday) more high-altitude records followed. A value of 6.2 degrees was measured at the measuring station on the Jungfraujoch. In the official record list, the previous high of 4.7 degrees from November 6, 1992 is recorded. On November 2nd, 2020, this value was exceeded on the Jungfraujoch with a measured 4.8 degrees. It was also very warm at the other mountain stations, but it was not enough for records.

The weather balloon also reported a record

The Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology launches a weather balloon in Payerne twice a day. According to the office, the probe of today’s midday balloon registered a value of +0.2 degrees at 4206 meters above sea level. There has never been such a high value in November.

A comeback already follows on Sunday

First of all, it is now done with high temperatures. A cold front reaches us on Thursday, and the snow line in the Jura falls below 1000 meters in the second half of the day, and on Friday night there is some snow well below 1000 meters in the central and eastern Alps. However, the amount of snow usually remains small, in the inner Alps and in the south almost nothing falls. After that it will be warm again, primarily at high altitudes. On Sunday, +9 degrees are expected again at 2000 meters above sea level. But it doesn’t get as warm as it is now.
