New protests break out in Chile: protesters demand Piñera’s resignation

Protesters gathered around the La Moneda Palace to demand the resignation of the president, Sebastian Piñera as well as the freedom of citizens imprisoned during the protests that have shaken the southern country since October 2019.

About 500 people summoned from social networks, this Wednesday, November 18, took the central Alameda Avenue for two hours, in front of the Executive headquarters. The militarized police of Carabinieri fired gases and jets of water at the protesters, some of whom threw stones at the officers.

The mobilization took place three weeks after the overwhelming majority of Chileans came out in favor of reforming the Constitution bequeathed by the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship (1973), which they consider to be the germ of social inequality.

During the demonstration, thousands of people passing through the area were affected by the water containing chemicals and tear gas fired by the Police.

An assistant identified as Alex Acuña, a 37-year-old mechanic, explained to AFP his reasons for attending: “Nothing has been achieved yet,” he affirmed despite the overwhelming triumph of the option “I approve” the change of the Constitution in the plebiscite of the last October 25.

“The resignation of Piñera has always been requested from the beginning due to everything that has happened in the social outbreak, the systematic human rights violations, there were deaths, a number of people with eye trauma and there is no person responsible. The high command never go to court or go to jail, “he added.

In the same vein, another protester, the 27-year-old student Danae Cariqueo, stated: “You cannot let go of the street, it is where the people make themselves heard. That is why they are so afraid of us and repress us as they are doing. (We will continue) until it’s over and everything changes. “
