New push for asylum centers outside the EU

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (VP) emphasized this on Friday after a meeting with Danish Migration Minister Kaare Dybvad Bek in Vienna with a view to the current talks on the EU’s asylum and migration pact. Dybvad said his country prefers a European solution. Bilateral negotiations between Denmark and Rwanda are currently on hold.

Denmark has a special role in EU migration policy because the country was granted an “opt-out” on internal security after the failed first referendum on the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. This enables Denmark, for example, to hold talks with Rwanda about setting up asylum centers, as mentioned.

Interior Minister Karner said that the aim of the asylum and migration pact must be that other countries, such as Denmark, also have these opportunities.
