New score is established for passing the basic certification exam in medicine

Now the minimum score will be 360, which corresponds to the equal percentage of 34.5%, and will be reconsidered once the State of Emergency is lifted due to covid-19

The Inter-Institutional Council for Basic Certification in Medicine temporarily established that the minimum score to pass the basic certification exam in medicine will be 360, which corresponds to a matched percentage of 34.5%.

The measure will be for the exams that take place as of March 2021 and will be maintained until the declaration of a State of National Emergency subsists, states Resolution No. 01 of March 3, 2021, published in Official Gazette No. 29234 .

“It is necessary for both the Ministry of Health and the Social Security Fund, the occupation of 100% of the boarding places available throughout the country, therefore, it is considered appropriate to make adjustments in the score of the basic certification exam in medicine taking as a reference the minimum score established by the National Council for Medical Evaluation of the United States ”, commented the Interagency Council for Basic Certification in Medicine.

In May 2019, the minimum score for the basic certification exam in medicine was 409, equivalent to the equalized percentage of 42.00%. Then in June 2020 it was changed to be 41.5%.

The score of 34.5% will be reconsidered by the Inter-Institutional Council for Basic Certification in Medicine, once the State of Emergency is lifted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The basic certification exam in medicine has been applied since 2014, by the Inter-institutional Council for Basic Certification in Medicine, in coordination with the University of Panama and the National Board of Medical Examiners of the United States.

Its purpose is to create the mechanisms to evaluate the level of academic, scientific and technical competence, as well as the ethical conduct of nationals and foreigners who enter the health system and maintain a continuous and permanent update of the exercise of the profession.

The basic certification exam in medicine is administered before the internship in the required careers.
