WhatsApp has been embroiled in a global controversy in recent days when updating user privacy policies. Social networks have been flooded with memes and comments alluding to this topic, although in reality these terms and conditions already existed since 2016, except for a change that has to do with WhatsApp Business, the business app launched in 2018.
According to an official WhatsApp statement, “the update does not change the data exchange practices of WhatsApp with Facebook and does not affect the way people communicate privately with friends or family anywhere in the world. WhatsApp remains fully committed to protecting people’s privacy ”.
The recent update of the privacy policies is focused on the business segment, only on commercial messaging, that is, it only affects you if you chat with any of the companies that use WhatsApp Business, which allows businesses to connect with their customers through direct messages, which has more than 50 million users in the world.
The update, which comes into effect on February 8, is in the sense of the relationship of consumers with companies that use WhatsApp Business. In Mexico, large retailers such as Superama, Elektra and recently Liverpool use this channel to provide better customer service Through the chat in which they can place orders, follow up on them, or express any questions about the products they offer.
Why is this privacy update happening?
Soon Facebook will offer the data storage service of large companies that use WhatsApp Business, as do other business service providers (BSP). Although this means that you will have access to personal information of those who chat with companies or the content of the conversations, as this information is encrypted, he explained to MILLENNIUM a spokesperson close to the social network and directly involved in the operation of these policies.
“To further increase transparency, we update the privacy policies to describe that, in the future, companies may choose to receive secure storage services from our parent company, Facebook, to help manage communication with their customers on WhatsApp.” , explains the company in its official statement.
The data that WhatsApp could share if you chat with a company through the app is the IP and the telephone number, only with the objective of offering personalized advertising based on the companies you have contacted.
In addition to this, one of the great projects of WhatsApp for this 2021 will be the possibility of making person-to-person payments through the app, to later pass that function to WhatsApp Business where products and services can be purchased from companies that use it.
“As we announced in October, WhatsApp wants to make it easier for people to make purchases and get help from a business directly on WhatsApp. While the majority of users use WhatsApp to communicate with friends and family, more and more people are also contacting companies ”.
In the last year, some elements have been added to the WhatsApp Business application such as the cart so that it can take the user directly to the company’s catalog, from which it can be purchased once it is authorized to make payments from this app.
