In the US metropolis New York, no one should be disadvantaged because of their waist size or size. Mayor Eric Adams signed an ordinance on Friday outlawing discrimination against people because of the shape of their body: adding weight and height to a list of protected categories. It is already stated there that nobody may be disadvantaged because of their ethnic background, their gender or their religion. The ordinance is scheduled to come into force on November 22nd.

“We all deserve equal access to employment, housing and public housing, regardless of our appearance. And it shouldn’t matter how tall you are or how much you weigh,” the Democrat said as he signed at City Hall.
The measure will ensure that more inclusive jobs and living environments are created. The ordinance passed by City Council this month provides exceptions in cases where a person’s height or weight could prevent them from performing essential duties in a job.

In business, the measure not only met with praise. “The magnitude of the implications and costs of this legislation have not been fully considered,” said Kathy Wylde, President and CEO of Partnership for New York City. The organization includes the heads of many of New York’s leading corporations.
Several other US cities have already banned discrimination based on a person’s weight or physical appearance, including San Francisco, the capital Washington and Madison in Wisconsin. There are also corresponding bans in several states, such as in New Jersey or Massachusetts.
